Quand un tir dévie, on cherche d'abord le coupable du côté du balancier, des pieds, ou du lâcher. Le poignet est rarement interrogé — et pourtant c'est lui qui transmet la direction finale de la boule, conditionne l'effet et absorbe (ou amplifie) les défauts du reste du geste. Un poignet bien utilisé peut compenser un balancier imparfait. Un poignet mal contrôlé peut ruiner un balancier parfait. Its position, stability and movement at the moment of release directly condition the final trajectory of the bowl. The 3 wrist configurations — locked, broken, supple

The locked wrist keeps the forearm and hand in a rigid alignment throughout the swing and up to the release. There is no flexion or extension movement of the wrist — the hand is in line with the forearm.

This is the configuration predominantly used by precise shooters. It has a major advantage: it reduces the sources of variability. If the wrist does not move, it cannot introduce deviation. The trajectory of the bowl depends solely on the swing and the release — two variables, not three.

The wrist "breaks" — flexes abruptly downwards or upwards at the moment of release. This movement is often involuntary, triggered by muscular tension or an attempt to "guide" the bowl at the last moment. It can also be the result of a release that is too late, where the arm has gone past its natural arc and the wrist compensates.

The wrist break is one of the most frequent and hardest-to-detect sources of direction error — because it occurs at the exact moment of release, too fast to be consciously perceived by the player, and visible only in slow-motion.

The supple wrist actively takes part in the movement — it flexes slightly backwards during the backswing and straightens naturally during the forward swing. This fluidity gives the action a "fluid" quality appreciated in pointing. For shooting, it is more delicate.

A supple wrist in shooting is not necessarily bad — some natural shooters use it successfully. But it introduces an additional variable : the degree of wrist flexion must be identical on every shot for the trajectory to be reproducible. Under fatigue or pressure, the suppleness of the wrist tends to vary — which creates inconsistency.

The wrist's influence on direction

The wrist influences the direction of the bowl along two axes: the vertical axis (height of the shot) and the horizontal axis (lateral). Understanding which configuration produces which deviation makes it possible to quickly identify the cause of a deviating shot.

🧭 DEVIATION AXES ACCORDING TO WRIST STATE Broken downwards → bowl that "dives" on impact — it hits the ground before the target bowl or arrives too low. Common among players who "hold back" their bowl at the last moment or who anticipate the impact by lowering the hand. Broken upwards → bowl that "rises" after the release — it arrives too high on the target bowl or overhangs it. Common with a release that is too late or a wrist compensating for a swing that is too short. External rotation (outwards) → bowl that deviates to the right for a right-hander. The wrist "turns" outwards at release, directing the bowl to the right. Often associated with an unconscious attempt to "aim" with the hand rather than the shoulder. Internal rotation (inwards) → bowl that deviates to the left for a right-hander. The pronation rotation of the wrist at release directs the bowl inwards. Common under pressure — the arm "tucks in" slightly on itself. Perfectly stable wrist → the final direction of the bowl corresponds exactly to the axis of the swing. No amplification, no correction. The precision then depends solely on the quality of the swing and the placement of the feet. 📐

The diagnostic rule: if your shots always deviate in the same direction (always to the left or always to the right), it is often the wrist — i.e. a reproducible rotation. If your shots deviate variably (sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes too high), it is often the overall stability — feet, swing or concentration. The pattern of the deviation is the first clue.

The 5 most common wrist mistakes

1 Wrist rotation at the release — the invisible error The wrist rotates slightly (pronation or supination) in the last centimetres of the forward swing. This movement is almost imperceptible at normal speed but observable in slow-motion. It is often the result of muscular tension that makes the arm "tuck in" or "open out" during the swing. SYMPTOMS Systematic lateral deviation, always in the same direction, regardless of distance. The deviation increases proportionally with distance — at 5m it seems normal, at 9m it is clearly visible. Correcting foot placement changes nothing. CORRECTION Film the release from the front in slow-motion. Observe the orientation of the palm at the exact moment the fingers separate from the bowl. The palm must be oriented towards the target (slightly up or down depending on the technique), not turned inwards or outwards. Practise keeping the palm "facing the target" throughout the forward swing. 2 The "final guide" — wanting to direct the bowl with the wrist Instinctively, some players try to "correct" the trajectory of their bowl at the last moment by slightly turning the wrist in the desired direction. This reflex is human — you want to "help" the bowl go where you want. But at the speed of the shot, this correction is impossible to execute precisely and most often produces an additional deviation. SYMPTOMS Very variable shots — sometimes on target, sometimes off, with no stable pattern. The player has the feeling of "almost succeeding" but the corrections applied make things worse. Successful shots occur when the late guiding is absent — which is random. CORRECTION Mental reframing: the direction of the bowl is decided by the axis of the swing and the position of the feet — not by the wrist. The wrist has no guiding role to play. Practise "letting go" of the bowl without any terminal movement of the wrist. The "splinted arm" exercise (imaginary cast, see exercises) helps deactivate this reflex. 3 Wrist tensing under pressure Under pressure (decisive shot, important tournament, others watching), muscular tension rises throughout the body — but it concentrates particularly in the forearm and wrist. A tense wrist produces a harder, less fluid release, with an increased risk of a break. SYMPTOMS Shots that succeed in training and miss in tournaments with no obvious technical reason. A feeling of "squeezing" the wrist during the throw in a pressure situation. Pressure shots are often too low or too short (broken downwards through tension). CORRECTION Forearm relaxation routine before each shot: open and close the hand 2–3 times, shake the wrist lightly to drive out the tension. This 3-second routine is enough to significantly reduce the muscular tension of the wrist before the throw. 4 The wrist compensating for a swing that is too short When the backswing is insufficient (too short), the energy generated is lower. To compensate and reach the desired force, some players "whip" with the wrist at the end of the forward swing. This compensating action generates power but at the cost of directional instability. SYMPTOMS Powerful but imprecise shots. High lateral variability. "Comfortable" shots (normal force) are more precise than "hard" shots or long-distance shots. Precision degrades with distance because wrist compensation increases with distance. CORRECTION Correct the backswing to make it sufficient — the power must come from the shoulder, not the wrist. Exercise: place a bowl in the hand in throwing position and perform only the backswing — make sure the arm rises high enough to build up the necessary energy without needing a final whip. 5 Wrist variability according to fatigue At the start of a tournament, the wrist is fresh and its behaviour is stable. At the end of the day, the muscular fatigue of the forearm and wrist subtly alters its rigidity and default position. Evening shots do not "land" like morning shots — not because of a concentration problem but because of a physical change in the wrist's behaviour. SYMPTOMS Precision that gradually degrades over the day with no obvious mental reason. Late-tournament shots are systematically less precise. The fatigue of the arm is perceptible but the player wrongly attributes it to mental fatigue. CORRECTION Intégrer des étirements et des rotations du poignet entre les mènes pour maintenir la souplesse musculaire. Adapter consciemment la position du poignet en fin de concours — si la fatigue induit un léger affaissement, compenser légèrement vers le haut. Et surtout : ne pas sous-estimer la fatigue physique du poignet comme facteur de dégradation de précision.

🎯 The precision shooter

Naturally locked wrist, fluid and stable swing. Their precision comes from the total repeatability of the action. May lack power over long distances.

Maintain the lock, work on power through the shoulder 💥 The powerful shooter

Supple wrist, naturally "whippy". Significant power but variable precision depending on fatigue. The wrist whip amplifies the slight deviations of the swing.

Stabilise the wrist on high-precision shots 😰 The shooter under pressure

Stable wrist in training, tense in tournaments. The tension builds up in the wrist and generates an involuntary break on decisive shots.

Relaxation routine before each shot in tournaments 🔄 The guiding shooter

Active wrist — tries to direct the bowl at the last moment. Very variable shots, hard to correct because the guiding is a deeply ingrained reflex.

The "splinted arm" exercise — deactivate the guiding 🌅 The tired shooter

Wrist that changes default position with fatigue. Degraded precision at the end of a tournament with no mental reason — pure muscular fatigue of the wrist.

Stretching and wrist rotations between ends 🏆 The expert shooter

Locked or slightly supple wrist — but above all conscious and repeatable. Can modulate the suppleness of the wrist according to the situation (distance, force required).

Diagnostic test — identify your wrist's behaviour

🔍 DIAGNOSTIC PROTOCOL — 3 STEPS Slow-motion film from the front — Place a smartphone on the ground or on a tripod, in the axis of the throw, facing you. Film 10 shots in slow-motion mode (120fps minimum). Look precisely at: the orientation of the palm at release, whether the wrist flexes or rotates at the moment the fingers separate from the bowl, whether the movement is identical on all shots. Slow-motion film from the side — Same protocol but with the camera on the side, on the axis perpendicular to the throw. Observe: does the wrist drop ("break") at the moment of release? Does it rise slightly (supple)? Does it stay rigid (locked)? The side view reveals vertical breaks that the front view does not show. Pressure deviation test — Comparer 10 tirs "à vide" (entraînement détendu) avec 10 tirs "à enjeu" (se fixer une punition symbolique pour chaque raté). Observer si le pattern de déviation change entre les deux séries. Si les tirs sans pression sont précis et les tirs avec pression dévient dans le même sens → crispation du poignet sous pression identifiée.

Exercises to stabilise and master the wrist

01 The splinted arm — deactivate the guiding 📍 Training ⏱️ 20 min 🎯 Lock the wrist, neutralise the guiding

The fundamental exercise to deactivate the wrist's guiding reflex and anchor the locked wrist in muscle memory.

Place a light stick (pen, short ruler) along the forearm, held in place by an elastic band or tape. This stick physically prevents any flexion movement of the wrist during the throw. Throw 20 bowls with this device at 6–7 metres. The stick mechanically forces the wrist to stay in a neutral position — the direction of the bowl depends solely on the swing and the feet. Observe the precision with the stick vs without. If the precision is better with it → your wrist "helps" too much normally, which creates variability. If the precision is similar → your wrist is already well controlled. Remove the stick and throw 20 bowls while keeping mentally the feeling of the locked wrist. The proprioceptive feeling memorised during the stick exercise guides the wrist without physical constraint. 02 Conscious rotation — master the axis of the wrist 📍 Training ⏱️ 15 min 🎯 Understand and control the orientation of the wrist

This exercise develops the proprioceptive awareness of the wrist's orientation — to be able to identify and correct involuntary rotations.

Throw 5 bowls normally. Then deliberately exaggerate an external rotation of the wrist at release (turn the palm outwards). Observe the rightward deviation produced. Memorise the feeling of this external rotation. Throw 5 bowls with an internal rotation exaggerated (turn the palm inwards). Observe the leftward deviation. Memorise the feeling of this internal rotation. Throw 5 bowls seeking the neutral position — palm oriented directly towards the target. Compare the precision with the two exaggerated rotations. Neutrality is the position between the two memorised feelings. Repeat the sequence (external, internal, neutral) until the neutral position is identifiable by feel alone, without needing to compare it with the extreme rotations. It is the proprioception of the neutral wrist that develops. 🧠 The wrist rule in shooting — one simple sentence

The wrist is the last amplifier before the bowl — it amplifies both the qualities AND the flaws of everything that precedes it. A good wrist does not correct upstream errors — it does not amplify them. The golden rule: the wrist must be stable, but its stability must be relaxed, not tense. Stable and supple — like a rubber splint, not a rigid metal splint. Firmness without tension is the quality sought.

FAQ — Your frequent questions

The wrist "snap" visible in some champions is not a mistake — it is a mastered technique. The difference with the break error is reproducibility: their snap occurs at the same moment, with the same amplitude and in the same axis on every shot. It has become an integral part of their automated action, calibrated over thousands of shots. For an intermediate player, reproducing this snap without having developed it gradually generally produces an irregular break — because the mastery of the snap's amplitude and timing is not yet ingrained. The conclusion: the snap can be a valid technique if developed consciously and gradually. Imitating it abruptly thinking it is the key to power is a classic mistake. It can be different — and it often is. For pointing, a supple wrist is common and functional, notably for the lifted point which requires creating backspin through the movement of the fingers. For shooting, a locked or near-locked wrist is generally preferable for directional precision. The majority of good-level players naturally have two distinct wrist behaviours — one for pointing, one for shooting. Having these two different behaviours is not a problem to correct: it is a functional adaptation to two different actions. Yes, significantly. Wrist tendonitis can create slight inflammation that alters mobility and proprioception — the player no longer exactly "feels" the position of their wrist. Osteoarthritis can reduce the range of motion and force involuntary compensations. In both cases, the pain often causes a defensive tensing of the wrist that degrades precision. Players suffering from joint problems of the wrist benefit from consulting a physiotherapist to adapt their technique — in particular finding a shooting angle that minimises the strain on the joint while preserving precision. Protocole de distinction en deux tests. Test 1 : tirer en exagérant délibérément le blocage du poignet (rigidité maximale) sur 5 tirs. Si la déviation latérale diminue → le poignet était la cause.
