Those who adapt — lowering the trajectory, waiting for a lull, choosing the rolling boule — win back a large part of what the wind takes from them." — Paquita 💨 WHAT THE WIND REALLY CHANGESTrajectory of high-arc boules: a boule thrown in an arc (half-lob or high lob) is in prolonged contact with the air — a lateral deviation of 5 to 20 cm is possible depending on the strength of the wind and the distance.
Jack position: a light jack on a hard surface (concrete, tarmac) can be moved by sustained gusts — particularly if it is in an isolated position with no boules around it.
Concentration: the noise of the wind, blowing dust, and sudden gusts disrupt the throwing routine and increase the error rate — even among experienced players.
→ These effects are real and must be taken into account in tactical decisions. 🚫 WHAT THE WIND DOES NOT CHANGEThe rolled boule: a boule that rolls along the ground from the moment it is thrown is virtually insensitive to the wind — it stays in contact with the terrain and never passes through the wind's zone of action.
Shooting: a shooting boule follows a short, fast trajectory — it spends so little time in the air that the lateral effect of the wind is generally less than 2 to 3 cm, i.e. less than the natural variability of the throwing motion.
Errors of throwing motion and posture: a boule that deviates because the plant foot pivots or because the shoulders are tense is not a boule deflected by the wind — even if the wind is blowing at the same time.
→ Blaming these errors on the wind is a rationalization, not an analysis. ✅ THE ADAPTATIONS THAT REALLY WORKLower the trajectory: switching from a half-lob to a rolled or semi-rolled boule considerably reduces exposure to the wind. It is the first and most effective of the adaptations.
Wait for the lulls in the wind: in gusty conditions, wait for a lull of a few seconds before throwing. This delay is worth more than a boule thrown into the gust.
Compensate laterally: in a constant crosswind (not gusting), aim slightly toward the side the wind is coming from so that the boule arrives at the desired position after the deviation.

Change your style completely: switching from a precision game to a "random" game, telling yourself there's no point seeking precision in a strong wind — a mental capitulation that makes the results worse.

Over a distance of 8 metres with a 25 km/h headwind straight in the face, a boule thrown high can fall 20 to 30 cm shorter than the same boule thrown without wind. → Adaptation: lengthen the trajectory slightly or compensate with force — but above all, switch to the semi-rolled boule, which almost entirely eliminates this effect. WHAT IS NOT CAUSED BY THE HEADWIND Boules that go off to the left or right. A headwind creates only a braking effect — no lateral deviation. If your boules deviate laterally in a headwind, it's a foot or shoulder problem, pas un problème de vent. Less intuitive to correct than a headwind because there's a natural tendency to "want to send it further" rather than hold back. → Adaptation: reduce the force or the height of the throw. The rolled boule remains the best solution — it will only be slightly accelerated by the tailwind, with no significant overshoot. THE TAILWIND PARADOX A tailwind is psychologically less unsettling than a headwind — players tend to ignore it or underestimate it. Yet it is just as systematic a source of errors. Vent de côté — la déviation latérale prévisible EFFET RÉEL TIR ET POINTÉ CE QUI SE PASSE RÉELLEMENT Le vent latéral est le seul type de vent qui produit une déviation latérale mesurable sur les boules en hauteur. Sur une boule lancée à 8 mètres en mi-haut, un vent latéral de 20 km/h constant peut dévier la trajectoire de 10 à 20 cm. This effect is predictable and compensable — provided the wind is constant. THE ADVANTAGE OF A CONSTANT CROSSWIND Paradoxically, a constant crosswind is easier to manage than a variable wind — because it is predictable. Once the deviation is calibrated on the first 2 or 3 boules, the compensation becomes automatic et le joueur adapté retrouve une précision comparable à son niveau habituel. Trying to compensate for gusts produces over-corrections that make the situation worse — because the anticipated gust sometimes doesn't happen at all at the moment of the throw. → Adaptation: wait for the natural lulls in the gusts before throwing. 3 to 5 seconds of observation are often enough to identify the cycle of the gusts and pick the right moment. THE REAL PROBLEM WITH GUSTS: THE MENTAL SIDE The main effect of gusts is not physical — it's mental. These effects are real but concern the playing environment, not directly the trajectory of the boules. → Adaptation: protect your eyes (glasses if necessary), check the jack's position before every boule, stand facing the wind to avoid dust in the eyes at the moment of the throw. WHAT IS OFTEN EXAGGERATED The effect of the wind on a jack's position is often overestimated. A jack placed on soft ground or surrounded by boules won't move except in a very strong wind. If the jack appears to have moved and there has been no contact with a boule, first check whether it was properly placed sur une surface plane avant d'attribuer le déplacement au vent. Vent faible mais constant — l'effet invisible le plus mal géré SOUVENT IGNORÉ SOUS-ESTIMÉ POURQUOI C'EST LE PLUS MAL GÉRÉ Un vent faible (moins de 15 km/h) est rarement identifié comme un facteur de dégradation des résultats — parce qu'il est trop léger pour être perçu comme "du vent". Yet over 12 to 13 ends, a constant 10 km/h tailwind can have shifted boules by 5 to 10 cm cumulatively — which represents the difference between a very close boule and a boule at an average distance. This light wind is almost always attributed to "the player's form" rather than to a real external condition. → Adaptation: at the start of the game, take 2 observation boules to test the effect of the light wind on distance. If the boules are consistently slightly long or short, adjust the force slightly — not the trajectory. THE CONFUSION WITH THE PLAYER'S FORM A light wind that produces boules systematically 8 cm too long will often be interpreted as "I'm throwing a bit too hard today". The player corrects their force without understanding that the problem comes from the wind — and when the wind changes (a gust, a change of direction), their boules suddenly go short with no explanation. This instability with no apparent cause is destabilizing and generates needless cascading corrections. Identifying the light wind as a factor at the start of the game avoids this whole cycle. Often ignored or confused with the player's form. A quick calibration at the start of the game solves the problem. → Key takeaway: don't wait to identify "wind" before taking the conditions into account. The player who identifies the effect of the wind on the first 2 or 3 boules and adjusts accordingly takes an immediate advantage over the opponent who keeps playing as if the conditions were neutral.
Adapting vs making excuses — the dividing line
✅Sign of a real adaptation You identify precisely which type of wind is blowing, in which direction, at roughly what strength. You change a single parameter of your game accordingly (trajectory, force, or lateral aim). Your results improve after the adaptation. If after 3 boules the correction works, you've read it well. If after 3 boules it hasn't improved, you look elsewhere. → Test: if you can name precisely what you've changed and why, it's an adaptation. Otherwise, it's probably something else. ❌Sign of a rationalization You blame the wind for boules that deviate in changing and inconsistent directions. The wind is blowing lightly but you invoke it to explain large discrepancies. Your two opponents play in the same conditions and produce regular boules. If the wind were truly responsible, their boules would be affected just as much as yours. → Test: if the opponent, in the same conditions, produces regular boules where yours are inconsistent, the wind is not the main cause of your errors. 🌬️The wind as a revealer The wind amplifies existing faults — it doesn't create them. A player whose plant foot pivots slightly will see this gap amplified by a crosswind. The wind doesn't deflect boules in random directions — it acts in a consistent and predictable way. If your boules deviate in varied directions in the wind, it means the wind is revealing a pre-existing instability of throwing motion. → Test: if your boules always deviate in the same direction in a crosswind, it's the wind. If they deviate in every direction, it's the throwing motion. ⚖️The honest question to ask yourself "Does the wind bother my opponent as much as me?" and "Would I have made these errors without wind?" Two questions that often distinguish the real effect of the wind from pre-existing errors. The wind doesn't create new faults — it reveals and amplifies the ones that already existed. Acknowledging this honestly is the first step toward correcting the true causes. → If the answer to these two questions is "no" and "maybe not", the wind is probably a real part of the problem. 🔑The easy excuse of the wind is all the more damaging because it prevents you from working on the real problems. A player who blames their errors on the wind won't try to correct their posture or their throwing motion — and will find the same errors again as soon as conditions are favourable. Using the wind as a systematic explanation means blocking your own progress by depriving yourself of the information that would let you genuinely move forward.

If the rolled series is regular but the half-lob series is deflected to the same side as the wind, the adaptation is simple: switching to the rolled boule eliminates the wind's effect. If both series deviate in different directions, the main cause is the throwing motion — the wind is a secondary factor. Repeat this test in different wind conditions. Over time, each player develops a precise awareness of what the wind actually does to their game — without exaggerating its effect or ignoring it.
