The kinetic chain of the throw — why the foot matters
The pétanque throwing motion engages the whole body from the ground up. What we call the "kinetic chain" refers to the transmission of forces and stability from the feet up to the hand that releases the bowl. Each link in this chain can amplify or dampen the imprecision that travels upward.
🦵 KINETIC CHAIN OF THE THROW How the ground travels up to the bowl 👟 ↓ 1. PLANTAR SUPPORT — the foundation The sole in contact with the ground defines the available support surface. A flat, stable sole maximises contact and provides a balanced base. A thick, soft sole reduces proprioception — the brain's perception of your own position — and introduces micro-instability on every throw. Impact on the throw: base stability → consistency of the arm pendulum 🦵 ↓ 2. ANKLE — transmission of balance corrections The ankle is the first shock absorber for ground instability. On uneven ground, it makes constant micro-corrections. If these corrections are too large (sloping ground, unstable surface), they travel up to the shoulder and create trajectory variations on the throw. Impact on the throw: ankle instability → lateral trajectory variations 🦿 ↓ 3. KNEE AND HIP — pendulum alignment The position of the knee and hip determines the axis of the arm pendulum. A slightly off-balance player compensates by tilting the hip, which shifts the throwing axis. This compensation is often unconscious — the player aims straight but their throwing axis is slightly off. Impact on the throw: hip misalignment → systematic lateral deviation invisible to the player 💪 ↓ 4. SHOULDER AND ARM — executing the throw The throwing arm works like a pendulum guided by the stability of the rest of the body. If the rest of the chain is stable, the pendulum can be precise. If balance corrections travel up from the ground, the pendulum is disrupted even if the arm motion itself is correct. Impact on the throw: a good arm motion on an unstable base gives poor results ✋ 5. HAND AND RELEASE — final precision The release of the bowl is the last link. It can partially compensate for instabilities upstream — but this compensation uses up attention that would be better spent on aiming. The less there is to compensate for in the chain, the more precise the release can be. ① Postural stability — the base of the whole kinetic chain A stable shoe lets the player focus on the motion rather than on their balance. An unstable shoe (very thick and soft sole, flip-flop, sandal without straps) forces the brain to allocate part of its attentional resources to managing balance — at the expense of focus on the target and the motion. This extra cognitive load is not conscious — the player doesn't "think" about their balance, but their brain manages it in the background, at the cost of reduced attention elsewhere. ⚙️ Measurable impact: on flat, stable ground, the difference between stable and unstable shoes is small. On uneven or sloping ground, it becomes significant — up to 20% variation in accuracy observed between conditions. → The ideal shoe provides firm support without being rigid — sole of 8 to 14 mm, slight lateral flex to adapt to the ground without destabilising. ② Grip in the throwing circle — avoiding slipping The throwing circle is often a specific surface — drawn in the dirt, marked out by a string, sometimes on gravel or concrete. A slip of the foot at the moment of the throw, even a minor one, disrupts the motion irreversibly for that bowl. A 1 cm slip at the foot can cause a 20 to 30 cm shift at 8 metres. The grip of the sole on your usual ground type is therefore a critical criterion. ⚙️ Soles with fine studs work well on dirt and gravel. Smooth soles slip on wet concrete. Very thick soles with deep studs create uneven support on concrete and generate their own instability. → On natural ground (dirt, gravel): low-profile sole with moderate studs. On concrete or hard surfaces: flat rubber sole or running sole with very fine studs. ③ Fatigue over long sessions — the cumulative effect A pétanque game can last 2 to 4 hours in a tournament. During that time, the player moves around regularly, stands, and performs repetitive bending and throwing movements. Unsuitable shoes accelerate fatigue in the feet, ankles and legs — fatigue that travels up the kinetic chain and gradually degrades accuracy. Late in a tournament, a player with tired feet often plays worse without knowing why. ⚙️ The effect of fatigue on accuracy is gradual — it doesn't show up in the first ends but builds up over 2 to 3 hours. Players who play in sandals or worn-out, deformed trainers suffer from this phenomenon without identifying it. → For tournaments lasting several hours: choose a shoe with good walking cushioning, not just good throwing stability. 🪨 HARD GROUND Concrete, indoor pétanque court, compacted surfaceHard and fairly smooth surface. Grip is less critical in dry weather — but becomes crucial in damp conditions or under leaves. Deep studs create uneven support on concrete and can destabilise.
Main need: flat rubber sole with moderate friction. Avoid deep studs. → Recommended: running shoes with a flat rubber sole, or lightweight shoes with a smooth grip sole. To avoid: deep studs (uneven support), very smooth synthetic soles (slippery on wet concrete). 🌿 STANDARD GROUND Packed earth, fine compacted gravel, outdoor pétanque courtThe most common setup. Slightly abrasive surface, natural grip when dry, slippery when damp. The sole must adapt to variations in texture between dry and damp areas.
Main need: low-profile sole with fine studs or modelled grip. Good lateral hold. → Recommended: low trail shoes, lightweight walking shoes, specialised pétanque shoes. To avoid: very smooth soles (slip on damp earth), studs that are too deep (they clog up). 🌱 SOFT GROUND Sand, loose gravel, grass, natural groundUnstable surface that demands the most postural compensation. The foot searches for its support on every throw — the ankle and knee work harder. Protection matters as much as grip.
Main need: good lateral ankle stability, sole with moderate grip so you don't sink in. → Recommended: trail shoes, lightweight high-top shoes with ankle support. A high upper is useful on very soft ground. To avoid: smooth flat soles (no grip on sand), flip-flops and sandals (risk of twisted ankle).Injury prevention — uneven ground and long sessions
Pétanque isn't known as a sport with a high injury risk — wrongly, on some points. Injuries specific to pétanque are few but recurring.
⚠️ ANKLE SPRAIN — THE MAIN RISKOutdoor pétanque terrain, especially informal games in parks or gardens, often has irregularities — holes, stones, roots, sloping ground. Repeatedly walking between the circles on this kind of terrain increases the risk of a twisted ankle.
Aggravating factor:Flip-flops, unstrapped sandals and shoes with no lateral stability offer no protection if you plant your foot unevenly. A closed shoe with an upper that wraps the ankle significantly reduces this risk.
Good practice: on uneven natural ground, even in hot weather, prefer a closed shoe that covers the ankle or a model with a slightly high upper. ⚠️ BOWL IMPACT INJURY — THE UNDERESTIMATED RISKA 700 g bowl dropping from a height of 50 cm onto an unprotected toe can cause a fracture or severe bruise. This risk is real and regular — particularly when collecting bowls or moving close to the playing areas.
Available protection:Specialised pétanque shoes often have a protective toecap at the toes. Lightweight safety shoes (without a heavy boot) also offer this protection.
In tournaments with children or less experienced players who throw poorly: toe protection is a reasonable and underestimated precaution. ⚠️ LOWER BACK PAIN — THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT OF POSTUREThe pétanque throwing motion involves a slight rotation and bending of the trunk, repeated dozens of times. On an unstable or uneven support, this repetition creates asymmetric loading on the lower back that can cause pain after 2 to 3 hours of play.
Link with shoes:An asymmetrically worn sole (lower on one side) tilts the pelvis slightly — which results in a throwing posture that is systematically slightly off-balance and lower back under strain.
Check the wear of your soles every 6 months: asymmetric wear visible to the naked eye is worth taking seriously, even with no immediate pain. ⚠️ PLANTAR FATIGUE — THE FASCIAE AT THE END OF THE DAYProlonged standing on hard or uneven ground loads the plantar arch and the fasciae of the foot. At the end of a tournament lasting several hours, this accumulated plantar fatigue can cause pain in the heel or under the foot (early plantar fasciitis).
Aggravating factor:Very flat soles with no cushioning (some overly minimalist specialised pétanque shoes) on concrete for 4 consecutive hours can trigger this pain in predisposed players.
Optimal compromise: a low sole for proprioception, but not entirely lacking cushioning. A 10–14 mm sole with a light base foam hits this compromise. 🔑The influence of shoes on your game follows a priority rule: (1) don't slip in the circle — minimum condition, (2) a stable base for the kinetic chain — performance condition, (3) protection against injuries — durability condition over the season. A shoe that meets all 3 criteria isn't necessarily expensive — it must be chosen with these 3 criteria in mind.
✅ SUMMARY — WHAT REALLY MATTERS The characteristics that have a real impact, in priority order 1️⃣Grip on your usual ground type — non-negotiable criterion. A shoe that slips in the circle makes everything else pointless. Check that the sole holds on the specific ground of your usual terrain, wet as well as dry. 2️⃣Sole height — low without being zero — an 8 to 15 mm sole offers the best proprioception without sacrificing cushioning. Beyond 20 mm, the cushioning foam starts to create micro-instability on the throw on hard ground. 3️⃣The symmetric state of the soles — an unevenly worn sole is more dangerous for posture than an old but uniform sole. Check wear regularly and replace before visible asymmetry. 4️⃣Fastening and ankle support — on uneven natural ground, a shoe that holds the ankle (laces tightened, wrapping upper) reduces the active stabilisation work and frees up attention for the motion. 5️⃣Shoe weight for long sessions — a light shoe (under 400 g per foot) tires you less over 3 to 4 hours of play. The best pétanque shoe is the one you're not aware of while you play. As soon as your feet occupy your mind — because you're slipping, because you're compensating for instability, because they hurt — your attention is somewhere other than on the bowl. The goal isn't to have the best possible shoe — it's to have a shoe that disappears completely from your awareness during the 3 hours of play.
Exercises to assess the impact of your shoes on your game
01 The in-circle stability test 📍 Usual terrain ⏱️ 10 min 🎯 Assess whether your shoes provide a stable base for the throwA simple test that reveals whether your current shoes provide an adequate base or introduce instability into the kinetic chain.
Stand in the throwing circle and adopt your usual throwing position. Without a bowl, simulate the arm pendulum motion 10 times in a row. Observe whether your foot support changes on each throw — a slight rotation of the foot, a shift forward or backward, the grip giving way slightly. These micro-movements are often visible once you look for them. Repeat the test on slightly damp ground or on the most uneven part of the terrain. If the grip drops noticeably, the current shoes aren't suited to this terrain in these conditions. The risk of slipping on an important throw is real. Compare with a different borrowed shoe if possible. The difference in stability between two pairs is felt immediately in the test — a pair with firm, stable support stands out clearly from a pair whose support "shifts". Check the wear on the sole of your current shoes. If one area is more worn than the others — particularly asymmetrically left/right — this asymmetry changes the tilt of your pelvis on the throw. Mentally draw a line across the worn sole — if it isn't horizontal, your throwing posture is slightly tilted every time. 02 The pre/post-fatigue accuracy test 📍 At the end of a long training session ⏱️ 15 min 🎯 Measure accuracy loss from equipment vs techniqueIsolate the "shoes" variable in end-of-session accuracy loss — separate what comes from equipment from what comes from technical fatigue.
At the start of the session (fresh feet), play 10 pointing bowls at a standard distance. Count the number of bowls in the target zone. Note this baseline score. After 2 hours of play, play 10 identical bowls again under the same conditions. Count again. If the score has dropped by more than 30%, part of this drop can be attributed to physical fatigue — feet, legs, concentration. The question is: how much comes from the shoes? Repeat the same experiment another time with different shoes — better suited to the terrain. If the end-of-session drop is smaller with the better shoes, the cause is clear: the first shoes were contributing to fatigue and instability. This test is also useful for assessing whether the drop comes from mental fatigue (concentration) or physical (feet, posture). If the results decline but the player still feels focused, the cause is more physical. If concentration is clearly reduced, the cause is mental — shoes can't fix that.FAQ — Your frequent questions
Several manufacturers offer pétanque- or boules-labelled models — notably brands specialising in traditional sports such as Salted Line, Obut, and a few French equipment makers. These shoes generally combine a flat sole with good grip on natural ground, reinforced toe protection against bowl impacts, and lightness suited to long sessions. They aren't essential for the occasional player, but they're a justified investment for the regular tournament player. Failing that, low trail shoes or lightweight walking shoes offer 90% of the benefits, often at a lower price. No — the FIPJP ruleset specifies no footwear requirement for players. Local tournament organisers can in theory impose dress rules (some tournaments require proper attire), but no national rule mandates a specific type of shoe. In practice, referees may flag an obvious safety risk (playing barefoot on stony ground, for example), but flip-flops and sandals are not formally banned even though they're discouraged. Slightly. The shooter makes a more dynamic motion with greater weight transfer — lateral stability is slightly more critical for them. The pointer makes a more static motion but with finer weight control — proprioception (the exact sensation of your position) matters more. In practice, both profiles benefit from the same stable, lightweight shoes — the difference in needs isn't enough to justify position-specific shoes. The main variable remains the terrain, not the role. Heat is the main reason players drift towards flip-flops and sandals — understandable but counter-productive for play. The solution isn't to sacrifice stability but to choose lightweight, well-ventilated shoes. Lightweight trail shoes with breathable mesh (open-weave fabric) or lightweight walking shoes with a non-insulating sole are perfectly usable in hot weather. Some players wear breathable technical socks that reduce perceived heat without having to give up the shoe.
