📉 ① Circle on a sloped or uneven area SlopeStability THE MISTAKE Placing the circle on a slightly sloped area — a ridge, a bump, an area with a protruding root — without checking the horizontality of the stance. The player ends up with one foot higher than the other, which tilts the torso and shifts the pendulum axis on every throw. ❌ Impact: systematic lateral deviations that the player blames on their stroke or the terrain — never on their misplaced circle. Up to 30 cm of offset at 8 metres on a 3° slope under the circle. THE FIX Before placing the circle, test the ground with your foot in several spots within the available area. Look for the flattest area. On very uneven terrain, moving 20 to 30 cm may be enough to find a stable stance. Never assume the "usual" spot is flat — check it every end. → Reflex: test 3 different positions with your foot before placing the circle. Choose the one where both feet land flattest. 📐 ② Circle too far offset laterally from the optimal axis AngleAiming THE MISTAKE The circle is placed too far left or right of the ideal jack-circle axis. Every player has a natural throwing direction (slightly in line with their dominant shoulder). If the circle forces you to play from a non-natural angle, the stroke has to adapt — with a loss of precision. ❌ Impact: the player compensates by turning the body, which creates an asymmetry in the pendulum. The boules consistently point to one side without the player understanding why their "normal" stroke doesn't work. THE FIX Identify your natural throwing direction (the front foot — dominant shoulder — jack axis). Place the circle so that this line passes directly through the jack. Within the 50 cm available, look for the lateral position that naturally aligns the body towards the target without forced adaptation. → Simple test: get into your throwing position without a boule and check whether your gaze naturally settled on the jack is in line with your body. If not, shift the circle. ☀️ ③ Circle placing the jack in the sun's axis SunAiming THE MISTAKE Placing the circle so that the sun is exactly in the aiming axis — facing the throwing players. This constrained light angle significantly reduces aiming precision and increases eye strain over several consecutive ends. Most players don't think to correct the circle's position to avoid this sun angle. ❌ Impact: degraded aiming, accumulated eye strain, reduced precision on subsequent ends. Boules "in the sun" are statistically less precise than others. THE FIX Within the 50 cm available, shift the circle laterally until the jack is no longer in the sun's axis. A 20 to 30 cm shift may be enough to take the jack out of direct glare. If the terrain allows, place the jack in a different position on the next end to avoid the troublesome axis. → To practise: before throwing the jack, look at the sun's angle and choose a playing direction that doesn't put the sun in the shooters' faces. The circle's position follows the jack's direction. 🏔️ ④ Circle ignoring the terrain's longitudinal slope SlopeDistance THE MISTAKE Placing the circle without taking the slope along the playing axis into account. Playing uphill vs downhill radically changes the effective distance for the same throwing effort. A player used to playing flat who places their circle at the bottom of a slope towards a jack positioned at the top will have to force much more — and vice versa for downhill. ❌ Impact: boules systematically short (on an uphill you didn't anticipate) or long (on a downhill you didn't anticipate). The player adjusts their force without understanding that the slope is the cause — and compensates in the wrong direction. THE FIX Observe the terrain's general slope before placing the circle. If the slope is significant, consciously adjust the throwing force from the first boule — not after noticing the offset. If the choice is possible, prefer a circle position that puts the jack in the slope's direction rather than against it. → On sloping terrain: always play the first 2 boules as "test boules" and adjust the force accordingly. Don't stubbornly "correct the stroke" when it's the slope that explains the offset. 🪨 ⑤ Circle too close to an obstacle or boundary ObstacleLimitation THE MISTAKE Placing the circle less than 1 metre from an obstacle (tree, post, bench) or from the terrain boundary. This constrains the feet's position and the arm's freedom of movement, forces the player to adapt their stroke and creates a risk of a fault (foot outside the circle to avoid the obstacle). In tournaments, this exposes you to a warning. ❌ Impact: constrained stroke, regulatory risk, extra pressure on the throw. Some players don't dare take their full pendulum for fear of hitting the obstacle behind them. THE FIX Always check freedom of movement behind you and to the sides before placing the circle. Stand in the imaginary circle and simulate the full pendulum without a boule. If an obstacle gets in the way, move the circle within the available regulatory area. This test takes 3 seconds and avoids disruptions during the end. → Regulatory reminder: at least 1 metre from any fixed obstacle. 📐 THE ANGLE EFFECT — THE FIGURESA circle offset 30 cm laterally changes the playing angle by about 2° at 8 metres' distance. This 2° difference shifts the boules' natural landing point by 27 cm laterally — more than half a boule diameter of offset from the target zone.
The calculation:tan(2°) × 8 m = 0.28 m. A circle just 30 cm off its optimal position therefore produces a potential 28 cm drift on the target — which the player must compensate for with their stroke, at the cost of extra effort and reduced precision.
Conclusion: the circle's lateral placement is one of the easiest variables to optimize and one of the most neglected. 30 cm of difference in the circle's position equates to 28 cm of offset on the target. 🧍 NATURAL ALIGNMENT — HOW TO FIND ITEvery player has a natural alignment — the line connecting their front foot, their throwing shoulder and the target in their usual stroke. This alignment varies according to build, grip and pointing style.
Test to find your alignment:Get into your usual throwing position, close your eyes, throw an imaginary boule 3 times. Open your eyes and see where your arm naturally points. This direction is the natural alignment to respect in circle placement.
The circle must be placed so that this natural alignment points exactly towards the jack — not 2° off. This placement avoids any compensation in the stroke. ⚖️ THE ASYMMETRIC STANCE — THE INVISIBLE EFFECTWhen the circle is placed on a slightly cambered area (tilted laterally), the player has one foot higher than the other. Their hip tilts to compensate, which shifts the pendulum axis.
The effect on the stroke:A 2° hip tilt shifts the pendulum axis by the same amount — which produces a systematic deviation in the direction of the tilt. The player corrects the stroke without ever correcting the real cause: the circle's position.
Test: if your boules systematically drift to the same side on a specific terrain, check whether your circle is on a camber before looking for a stroke error. 🗺️ USING THE AVAILABLE AREA INTELLIGENTLYThe rules give a 50 cm circle diameter and the latitude to place it anywhere within the regulatory area. This latitude is a tactical resource — not a drawback to manage.
Tactical use of the area:Look for within the available area: the flattest zone, the most natural angle towards the jack, the distance that maximizes your playing style (slightly shorter for pointers who like a short distance, slightly longer for those who like a long distance).

To be sought first. If the centre is sloped or uneven, accept a slight lateral offset for a better stance.

→ Interesting tactical angle for varying the approach and thwarting opposing blocks 🎯 THE CIRCLE AS A TACTICAL DECISION — NOT JUST LOGISTICS What experienced players do with circle placement 🗺️They assess the terrain zones before placing the circle. Not just "the terrain is there" — but "which zone gives the best angle of attack, the best stance and the best slope angle for this specific end?" This assessment takes 5 seconds but changes the whole end. 🔍They use the circle's position to force the opponent to play from a difficult angle. By placing the jack in a precise zone, then choosing a circle that gives them an optimal angle of attack, they force the opponent to play from a less favourable angle — especially if they pick the circle back up without thinking. ⚖️They exploit the slope in their favour. On sloping terrain, placing the circle so as to play with the slope (downhill) improves pointing precision — the boules roll naturally towards the jack. The opponent, forced to play against the slope from the same circle, is at a structural disadvantage. 🌳They proactively avoid problematic sun angles. In late afternoon, the low sun can make certain playing axes difficult. Choosing your circle so as not to have the sun in your face is a comfort and precision decision that is never discussed regulation-wise — but it changes the outcome over several ends.The placement checklist — 5 points in 5 seconds
✅ BEFORE PLACING THE CIRCLE — FIVE QUESTIONS IN FIVE SECONDS The placement protocol that good players apply on every end 1️⃣ Is the ground flat under my feet here? Test the stance with your foot before placing. If the ground is sloped, move 20 to 30 cm within the available area to find a flatter stance. This is the priority question — an unstable stance compromises everything else. → Why: the slope under the circle reverberates through the whole kinetic chain — an unbalanced stance deflects all the boules systematically in the same direction. 2️⃣ Does my natural alignment point towards the jack from here? Get into throwing position and check whether the jack is in the pendulum's natural axis. If not, shift laterally until the alignment is correct — do not adapt the stroke to the wrong alignment. → Why: playing from a non-natural angle forces you to compensate in the stroke, which reduces the precision and reproducibility of the throw. 3️⃣ Do I have enough clearance behind and to the sides? Simulate the full pendulum without a boule to check there is no obstacle within arm's reach. At least 1 metre of clearance behind you — and enough space that partners' arms don't get in the way. → Why: a nearby obstacle constrains the pendulum and produces short or deflected throws. It's also a regulatory obligation in official competition. 4️⃣ Is the sun or light troublesome on this playing axis? Look towards the jack from the envisaged position. If the sun is in the aiming axis, shift the circle laterally to take the jack out of direct glare. A 25 to 40 cm shift may be enough. → Why: sun glare degrades aiming precision and accumulates eye strain over several ends — which progressively degrades precision over the course of the game. 5️⃣ Does this position give me a tactical advantage, or does it give one to the opponent? If the opponent picks the circle back up from the same position, will they be advantaged or disadvantaged by the angle and the slope? On sloping terrain, playing from the bottom of the slope (uphill) often advantages the pointer — the opponent then plays the other way. → Why: circle placement is not only a matter of personal comfort — it's also a tactical decision that affects how the opponent will be forced to play the next end. 🔑These 5 checks actually take 5 to 8 seconds combined — and much of it is done simultaneously while you pick up your boules. The majority of players do none of these checks. Doing them systematically isn't perfectionism — it's building a structural advantage before every end, without changing a single line of the throwing technique.
Exercises to develop a conscious circle placement
01 The deliberate placement session — comparing 3 positions 📍 Terrain with relief or a slight slope ⏱️ 20 min 🎯 Measure the real impact of the circle's position on precisionA simple exercise that reveals how much the circle's position influences the results — often spectacularly for players who have never tested it.
Place a jack at 8 metres. Define 3 distinct circle positions : one centred and flat (position A), one offset 30 cm to the left on a slight slope if available (position B), one centred but on a small bump or uneven area (position C). Mark each position so you can return to it. Play 5 boules from each position, with the same usual stroke and no deliberate compensation. Measure and note the average offset to the jack for each position — distance and direction. Don't try to understand during the exercise, just measure. Compare the results. The difference between the best and the worst position reveals the impact of circle placement on precision. In most cases, the offset is 20 to 40 cm between the best and the worst position — before any change of technique. Repeat the exercise on several different terrains to understand how the soil characteristics (slope, hardness, obstacles) interact with circle placement. Before every end, announce the 5 checks in a low voice while picking up the circle: "flat ground? alignment? clearance? sun? tactical advantage?" Naming them in a low voice forces awareness and speeds up automation. If one of the checks reveals a problem, take the time to correct the circle's position even if it takes 5 extra seconds. The opponent can wait — the rules allow it. The correction is worth the time invested over the whole end. At the end of the game, assess how many ends benefited from a deliberately improved placement. For each, try to remember whether the outcome was different from usual. This retrospective develops the tactical memory of circle placement. From the 3rd game with this routine, stop announcing out loud — but continue to do the checks mentally. The aim is that within 10 games the checklist happens automatically without conscious effort, as a natural part of the start-of-end ritual. ⭕ The golden rule of circle placementThe circle isn't just the spot you throw from — it's the foundation of the whole end. A well-placed circle doesn't guarantee a good end, but a misplaced circle compromises every boule that comes out of it.
