Introduction

It's a small revolution that's going to get people talking in the clubs. Until now, marking the position of the jack was a survival reflex for any pointer. But from this 2026 season, the FFPJP is getting tougher on the "hidden jack". If the jack is moved to a non-visible area and it hasn't been marked to the new standards, a dead end is guaranteed. Paquita explains how not to lose points stupidly.

The major change to Article 7

The official rules, available on the FIPJP (International Federation), now state that the visibility of the jack is the players' responsibility. If a shot moves the jack into a hole or behind an obstacle and no valid marking witness is present, the umpire will declare the end dead.

This rule aims to put an end to endless disputes in top-level competitions. It fits perfectly with the spirit of the 2026 rules and the return to wild pétanque, where mastering rough terrain becomes a major asset.

How to mark without being penalised?

For your marking to be valid in 2026, forget the crude marks made with your foot. The umpire requires:

  • Fine, precise marking: Use a rod or an approved marker.
  • Double checking: The opponent must validate the position of the marking before the start of the end.

If you're unsure about the marking equipment allowed, take a look at the shop of official accessories approved by the FFPJP. Also remember to check that your club has updated its information boards via our free tools for petanque players.

The risks for your team

Poor or missing marking can cost you the game. In the event of a dispute over a jack that has become invisible, the umpire will no longer try to "guess" the original position. No valid marking = end cancelled.

Conclusion

The "hidden jack" will no longer be an excuse to slow down play. In 2026, precision starts before you even throw the first boule. Be rigorous with your markings, respect the terrain, and avoid needless arguments with the umpire!
