What is hardness — the physics explained

The hardness of a material measures its resistance to permanent deformation under the effect of a force. For pétanque bowls, it is expressed in Rockwell units (HRC) — a standardized scale used in metallurgy. The higher the HRC value, the harder the steel.

Pétanque bowls are made of heat-treated steel (quenching and tempering). The heat treatment modifies the crystalline structure of the steel and determines its final hardness. An "extra-hard" bowl has undergone a more intense heat treatment than a "soft" bowl — which gives it both higher hardness and increased wear resistance, at the price of a livelier rebound behavior. It is not superior quality — it is a different behavior.

WEAR AND DURABILITY Maximum durability — extra-hard steel resists impacts and wear the best. A well-maintained extra-hard bowl can last 10 to 15 years of regular play without notable change in behavior. It is the most profitable long-term investment. Interaction with the opposing bowl — the key forgotten factor

Your bowl's hardness does not work in a vacuum — it interacts with the opposing bowl's hardness at the moment of metal-to-metal impact. This interaction is governed by the laws of elastic collision physics and can significantly modify the effectiveness of your shot.

The fundamental physical rule: during a collision between two bowls, the harder bowl transfers more energy to the softer bowl. An extra-hard bowl against an opposing soft bowl = the opponent flies far, you stay (quasi-carreau). A soft bowl against an opposing extra-hard bowl = you absorb the energy, you go back, the opponent stays almost in place. This is not anecdotal — against certain teams in competition, choosing your hardness based on the opposing hardness can make a measurable difference.

🧪 The advanced strategy — adapting hardness to the opponent

In high-level competitions, some teams have two sets of bowls of different hardnesses and choose based on the opponent. It is a rare practice at club level but perfectly legal — and it illustrates how much hardness is a tactical parameter as much as a technical one. For the majority of players, a hardness adapted to their role and terrain is amply sufficient.

Hardness and wear — what gets damaged the fastest

💧 Soft — visible wear in 2–3 years

Impact marks appear relatively quickly. The bowl "takes" the impacts and the surface shows marks after 2–3 years of intensive play. The behavior can evolve slightly over time.

🌿 Semi-hard — good longevity (4–6 years)

Correct wear over several years of regular play. Impact marks are present but superficial. Stable behavior over time. The good durability/cost ratio for regular players.

⚡ Hard — very good longevity (6–10 years)

Hard steel resists impacts well. Only superficial marks. The behavior remains stable over many years. A profitable investment for regular shooters in competition.

🔴 Extra-hard — maximum longevity (10–15+ years)

Maximum wear resistance. Bowls that can go through decades of play without notable change in behavior. The true lifetime investment for serious competitors.

Comparison between brands — the problem of names

Hardness names are not standardized between brands. An Obut "hard", an MS "hard" and a Boulenciel "hard" do not necessarily correspond to the same HRC value. Each manufacturer defines its own categories. To correctly compare two bowls of different brands: ask for the exact HRC value (some manufacturers communicate it), or physically test the rebound of the bowl against a known hard surface. Obut bowls are generally positioned on the medium-hard spectrum, MS bowls have a reputation for high hardness, and Boulenciel offers stainless steels whose hardness compares differently from standard steels.

The myths about hardness — debunked

FAQ — Your frequently asked questions

No — a single player's three bowls must be of the same FIPJP-approved model, which implies the same hardness. On the other hand, in a triplette team, each player can have their own bowls of different hardness — the shooter in extra-hard, the middle in hard, the pointer in semi-hard. It is perfectly legal and even recommended to optimize each role. Two practical methods: 1) Rebound test — drop the bowl from hip height onto a flat hard surface (concrete). An extra-hard bowl will bounce noticeably more than a soft one. Compare several bowls under the same conditions. 2) Sound test — strike two bowls against each other. A hard bowl produces a clear and prolonged metallic sound. A soft bowl produces a duller and less resonant sound. These tests are approximate but allow a relative comparison. The crystalline structure of hardened steel does not change significantly with normal game wear. An extra-hard bowl remains extra-hard after 10 years of play. What changes with wear is the surface (grooves, geometry) — not the intrinsic hardness. On the other hand, a chipped bowl or one that has suffered an unusual violent impact may have micro-cracks in the steel that locally modify its behavior — this is an additional reason to remove dented bowls from play.
